My Journey with Waste: Why I’m Asking You to Share Yours

Bhuwan Chalise shares his personal journey with waste in Nepal and invites you to contribute your story through Green Smith Nepal’s Waste Story Submission Campaign.

Growing Up with Waste

In my youth I spent my time in Kathmandu valley, where waste was part of the landscape—plastic bags fluttering in the wind, overflowing bins on street corners, and the quiet labor of waste workers who rarely got recognition. As a young person, I didn’t think much of it. As an adult, I realized it was a symptom of something deeper: a disconnect between our habits and our environment.

That realization led me to found Green Smith Nepal, and later host the Deep Dive Nepal podcast. My goal has always been simple: to bridge that disconnect through storytelling, data, and community action.

Why I’m Asking for Your Story

Today, I’m asking you to share your own experience with waste—because I know how powerful stories can be.

Maybe you’ve organized a cleanup in your neighborhood. Maybe you’ve struggled with municipal collection delays. Maybe you’ve found a clever way to reuse or recycle. Or maybe you’ve simply felt overwhelmed by the mess.

Whatever your story is, it matters. It can help others learn, feel seen, and take action.

What Inspired This Campaign

This campaign was born out of frustration—and hope. Frustration with systems that don’t work. Hope that people still care.

We’ve seen how data can drive policy. But data without stories is just numbers. That’s why we’re collecting real voices from across Nepal—so we can build solutions that reflect lived realities.

What You’ll Be Asked

The form is simple. You’ll share:

  • Your name and location
  • Your role in waste (household, business, activist, etc.)
  • A story—good, bad, or in-between
  • What happened, when, and where
  • What impact it had
  • What others can learn
  • A photo or video (optional)
  • Whether you’d like to stay involved

It takes less than 10 minutes. But its impact could last much longer.

What Happens Next

Once you submit your story, our team at Green Smith Nepal will review it. With your permission, we may feature it in:

  • Our blog or podcast
  • Social media campaigns
  • Policy briefs and reports
  • Community workshops

You can choose to remain anonymous or be credited. Either way, your voice will be heard.

Why This Is Personal

I’ve seen how waste affects mental health, dignity, and opportunity. I’ve met waste workers who are proud of their work but ashamed of how society treats them. I’ve talked to students who want to help but don’t know where to start.

This campaign is for them. It’s for you. It’s for all of us who believe that change begins with listening.

Final Thoughts

If you’ve ever felt like your experience didn’t matter—this is your chance to prove it does.
